Both Biden and Trump have demonstrated symptoms of cognitive decline, but only Biden and the 17,000,000 Americans who will lose health insurance have suffered as a result. The 53 million Americans who speak Spanish have been marginalized, their patriotism dishonored and their ongoing contribution to American prosperity maligned. The diminishment of mental faculties as BIden and Trump approach 80 (as both are) is simply not the same here. An “administration” attached to the president’s name is a cohesive team of collaborators whose accomplishments carry the president’s name because he’s the one who won the election. One of these men is kind and benevolent, with a lifetime of public service and a team that governed effectively. The other is a callous and untrustworthy man, a convicted felon who routinely refuses to pay people who work for him and has stiffed his creditors in six (six!) bankruptcies.

It is a group of mental health professionals who have been raising the alarm about Trump’s increasingly sociopathic behavior since 2017. Now in 2024, Gartner has an even more dire warning about Trump: that there are increasing signs the former president is heading fast down the road toward dementia.
A small bit about this important contribution to the public discourse, from seven months before the 2024 election:
While for many it’s obvious how serious Trump’s declining mental capacity has become, for too many Americans that reality has not yet broken through. The media continues to treat Trump like a normal candidate; many Americans have baked Trump’s bizarre behavior into their perceptions of him; and many take right-wing lies about Joe Biden’s mental fitness at face value.

And meanwhile the news media lies prostrate on the floor, unable to probe or even write about what is right there before all our eyes. Stop, look and listen to Trump address CIA officers, West Point graduation, mourners at Arlington Cemetery. He blathers and rambles about nonsense and his unbelievable this or that or the other thing. He talks about himself and everyone else is his audience.
The action to take here is not letters to the editors or calls to your Representative in Congress. There are no lawsuits to file and Trump’s unqualified toadies in his cabinet know nothing about the 25th Amendment and the removal of an incapacitated president. The one and only way of addressing this is with a truly massive mobilization that brings a million citizens to DC, the largest protest march in American history. If there is some other method of draining his government of its legitimacy we don’t know what it is.
